Dameon was only 12 years old when he became a hero. Lonely, isolated,
and struggling with his own problems, Dameon reached out to help Michael,
a nine-month old boy sick with Leukemia.
Michael needed a life-saving bone marrow transplant, but insurance wouldn’t pay, and Michael’s family didn’t have the $175,000 the hospital was requiring for admittance. Upon hearing about this, Dameon emptied his bank account to help pay for the operation that Michael so desperately needed. His generosity of spirit, a gift of 12 five dollar bills, inspired other young people at Kamiakin Jr. High in Kirkland, Washington to help raise over $227,000 in just four weeks, enough for the transplant that saved Michael’s life.
From this story of hope and heroism, Sparrow Clubs was born.
Sparrow Clubs believes that
"Kids will do heroic things
when they have
heroic things to do."
Since its inception in 1995, Sparrow Clubs has helped children in medical crisis through the work of thousands of young people. Sparrow Clubs is proof that you’re never too young to make a difference.
As the nation’s only youth-based charity of its kind, Sparrow Clubs not only provides financial and emotional support for critically ill children and their families, but also empowers kids to help others through charitable service experiences. It helps students like Dameon find their wings through giving, expressing compassion, and in serving others.
